Frommer's Review

With all the pine trees in the area, someone had to name a hotel "Pine Needles," and someone did. The resort -- home to the U.S. Women's Open Championships -- is the creation of local legend Peggy Kirk Bell, a champion golfer and golf instructor, who opened it with her late husband. It has won many a devoted fan over the years. The golf course here was designed in 1927 by Donald Ross, the famous golf architect. The handsome rooms are spread across 10 rustic two- and four-story lodges that can hold groups of 10 to 20 people each; returnees often select their favourite. Decidedly informal, the guest rooms have rustic styling, often with exposed beams. The Bell family purchased the Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in 1994.
